JEFF ULBRICH was selected in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers.
This is a picture of Jeff when he played in the 21st Annual Charlie Wedemeyer All Star Football Game. He graduated from Live Oak in 1995 and attended the University of Hawaii. At Hawaii as a starter at middle linebacker, he led the WAC last year with a school record 169 tackles, including 127 assisted tackles - also a school mark. He also had two interceptions and eight sacks
Story in the SJ Mercury: When the 49ers chose third-round pick Jeff Ulbrich, they stole him away from Dallas. So sure were the Cowboys that Ulbrich would be there they gave him a Cowboys cellphone - one of a handful handed out to prospective draft picks - and told the linebacker to be ready for a call.
When the call came, it was from the 49ers. Dallas was unable to move up to draft him. And the phone? "I had my wife return it," Ulbrich said.
The 49ers had pulled off a deal with Seattle, trading fourth- and fifth-round picks for the Hawaii linebacker which they took with their 86th selection.
The pro line on Jeff is: He has good speed and is relentless, but he has some trouble getting off the blocks. The 49ers envision him playing behind Winfred Tubbs. "He's 250 pounds of high-energy," said Mariucci. "Who knows? Maybe he's another Matt Millen."
